From 19 through 30 October 2009, the fifth edition of teachers’ seminar took place in the Yad Vashem Memorial, Jerusalem. This time, 21 Czech teachers participated, earning their place in the seminar by the school project they headed.
In Jerusalem, they took part in a varied programme divided into several blocks by topic. Specialist lectures on various aspects of the Holocaust were interspersed with workshops of the International School of Holocaust Studies of the Yad Vashem Memorial. The Czech teachers were, as usual, particularly impressed with the focus on teaching, practical methodological advice and instructions for presenting the topic to various age groups. Another remarkable asset was the large number of specialized resources for teachers (textbooks, CD-ROM, posters, etc.) which the teachers could pick and choose from the wide variety offered by Yad Vashem.
Trips to the Old Jerusalem, the surroundings of Nazareth and the city of Tel Aviv formed a suitable supplement of the main programme and gave the seminar another dimension – learning about the Israel of today.
The seminars were created as a result of cooperation between the Terezín Memorial and Yad Vashem, they are however also sponsored by contributions from the funds of the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the international organization Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance, and Research. Altogether, more than one hundred Czech teachers have already participated in the seminar.
