Every year, at the beginning of June, the Terezín Memorial hosts a ceremony announcing the results of the Hana Greenfield Memorial art competitions. Following this event, an exhibition showcasing the winning entries is opened, typically in the Ghetto Museum. This exhibition remains on display until the end of summer for that year. Afterward, the entire collection is prepared for exhibitions outside the Terezín Memorial.
The theme of the 2024 competition was “The First Thing I Do after the War Will Be… .” At the turn of November and December 2024, a collection of award-winning works from last year’s competitions was displayed in the library branch in Turnov II. This exhibition ran from December 5, 2024, to February 4, 2025.
This particular location was selected because Hana Čapková, a regular competitor, lives nearby. Her entries sent to the competition over the last three years have always received awards.
The finissage or the closing ceremony of the exhibition, which took place on February 4, 2025, was attended by Jan Kaňa, an employee of the Terezín Memorial’s Department of Education. The event included a short lecture introducing not only the competition itself and its founder, Hana Greenfield, but also detailing various activities of the Memorial´s Department of Education. Hana Čapková also spoke briefly about her entries in the competition.
The exhibition then moved to Postoloprty, where it was on display in the exhibition hall of the Information Center of the Cultural Facilities of the City of Postoloprty (KZMP) from March 3 to May 6, 2025.
The finissage of that exhibition took place on May 6, 2025. It was attended by the award-winning students from the local Elementary Art School: Daniela Suchá, Magda Luhanová, and Jan Pištora, along with their teacher, Miroslava Folberová. KZMP director Pavel Panenka and other guests were also present. Sylvie Holubová and Jan Kaňa, employees of the Department of Education of the Terezín Memorial, then spoke about their Department’s agenda, shared the story of Hana Greenfield, and discussed the history of the competition. The accompanying music program was performed by girls from the Postoloprty Art School.

We would like to thank the aforementioned institutions for their interest and for establishing cooperation with the Terezín Memorial’s Department of Education during the exhibitions.
Sylvie Holubová, Jan Kaňa
